Public Management & Governance

The Public Management and Governance (PMG) track aims to attract qualified and motivated students interested in conducting academic and non-academic research on **public and non-profit management topics**, in an era where the boundaries between public, non-profit, and private sectors are increasingly blurred.
In addition to the research methodology courses, held in English during the first year of the program, lectures address, among others, the following main themes through a multidisciplinary perspective:

  • Public management reform programs: implementation models and effects evaluation;
  • Strategy and performance management in the public sector;
  • Organizational change and innovation;
  • Transparency, open government, and the fight against corruption;
  • Collaborative governance: network management and co-production;
  • Leadership;
  • Accounting and accountability;
  • Healthcare organizations management;
  • Management of international institutions;
  • Good governance and inclusive development;
  • Non-profit management, social entrepreneurship, and social innovation.
Particular emphasis is placed on the **relevance of research activities** for public decision-makers (policy-makers), professionals, and public opinion, in addition to methodological rigor. PhD students are encouraged to actively participate in international academic networks, such as the International Research Society in Public Management (IRSPM), the European Group for Public Administration (EGPA), the thematic group on Public and Non-Profit Management of the European Academy of Management (EURAM), and EGPA-Med, among others. They also participate in teaching activities in the main undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate courses in public and non-profit management at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, and have the opportunity to acquire practical skills and professional experience, such as organizing international conferences and training courses.
Former PhD students of this track now work as professors in Italian and foreign universities and hold leadership positions in national and local institutions.
The coordinator of the PMG track is Professor Denita Cepiku.
