Crystal lattices. Miller indexes. Metal structures (bcc, fcc, hcp). Ionic solids. Born-Haber cycle. Calculation of lattice energy (Born-Landé equation). Madelung constant. Typical structures of ionic solids: CsCl, NaCl, blende (ZnS), fluorite, spinels, perovskites. Introduction to point and extended defects in real solids. Point defects. Calculation of the equilibrium concentration of vacancies. Extrinsic defects. Point defects and ionic conductivity of crystals. Arrhenius equation for ionic conductivity in an electric field. Kröger-Vink notation. Lambda sensor. Defect concentration as a function of oxygen partial pressure (Ceria, NiO).
