BIOPLASTICS: CHARACTERISTICS AND APPLICATIONS
Global plastic production reached 448 million ton in 2018, with about 8 million ton entering the oceans each year. The careless use of plastic in our daily life has made this material the main pollutant of the world seas and oceans.
Thus, from July 2021, the ten single-use plastic objects most frequently found on beaches have been banned by the European Community.
Bioplastics are innovative materials, conceived as alternative to plastic of fossil origin. They can be bio-based, or biodegradable, or have both characteristics.
Although bioplastics can bring advantages over conventional plastics, they are not always really sustainable and their definition is not univocal.
The purpose of this course is to bring clarity and understanding of these new materials, their chemical-physical properties and their industrial workability.

MATERIALS CHALLENGES IN CONCENTRATING SOLAR THERMAL RESEARCH
Thanks to the availability of commercial thermal energy storage solutions that, in current installations, allow to operate at rated capacity for more than 17 h without solar resources, concentrating solar thermal (CST) technologies can provide a firm and dispatchable renewable energy supply for a wide range of applications like power generation, industrial or residential heating, or fuel production.
The CST industry is relatively young, and there is still much room for research to improve the techno-economic performance of the current technologies. In this respect, materials research can play a primary role, since the harsh operating conditions (e.g., very high temperatures, and corrosive environments) that characterize several key components of CST plants call for advanced solutions combining sustainability, durability, and cost-effectiveness with good mechanical, optical, chemical, and thermal performance.
This series of lectures will provide an overview of the status of CST technologies and an insight on some current research topics on materials research carried out in this field by ENEA - Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development.

SMART BIOSENSORS
In the analytical sector, several analyte, including heavy metals, drugs, pesticides, food contaminants, and biomarker are usually detected by atomic absorption spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, and high-performance liquid chromatography. These techniques are characterized by the requirement of laboratory set-up, high-cost instrumentation, and skilled personnel, making them unsuitable for on-site analyses.
In this scenario, the use of reliable, sensitive, miniaturized, and cost-effective analytical tools is the main approach for delivering sustainable analyses. Electrochemical techniques coupled with screen-printed electrodes (SPE) are among the most promising sustainable devices for organic solvent-free and on-site measurements. Furthermore, the high potential of SPEs relies in their customization with inorganic nanomaterials and/or biocomponents for the detection of multi-analytes.
The most recent results in the development of smart electrochemical devices, exploiting the combination of printing techniques (e.g. screen-printing and 3D printing for sensor mass-production), nanomaterials (e.g. using cost-effective and high-performing carbon black) will be discussed. The use of paper as smart support in the sensing field will be reported, demonstrating that paper acts not only as a support but also as a reagent reservoir and material for sample treatment. In addition, the use of synthetic probes as biocomponents, e.g. aptamers, will be described, highlighting the advantages of replacing antibodies or enzymes. Finally, the versatility of the developed electrochemical (bio)sensors will be demonstrated, by describing their applications in different fields, including the environmental, safety, agri-food and biomedical ones.

ORGANIC MOLECULES PHOTOMATERIALS
The light-molecule interaction allows the conversion of the electromagnetic waves into electrical and chemical energy. In particular, organic molecules possess peculiar characteristics that make them particularly useful in the photochemical and photovoltaic fields. In fact, molecules with an extended aromatic skeleton absorb light in the most useful areas of the electromagnetic spectrum, the visible zone between 400 and 700 nm. The course will examine the necessary and useful molecular characteristics that a molecule must possess in order to interact effectively with light, the energy path of molecular electrons after having absorbed the electromagnetic wave, the possible reactive paths and the applications of organic molecules in various photochemical fields.
