Research topics

Founded by: Key Partner Consulting s.r.l.

Research topic: Internal enabling factors, digital transformation and AI as drivers of heterogeneous effects on productivity and employment
Description: This research topic aims to understand why firms that are ex ante similarly exposed to the same policy or shock (for instance tax incentives, digital transformation programs, or the introduction of artificial intelligence solutions) experience highly heterogeneous effects on productivity and employment. “Internal enabling factors” are defined as the within firm elements that determine how effective a given technology or policy is: the stock of physical and digital capital, the workforce’s skills and data/AI literacy, management quality, organizational design, operational processes, incentive systems, and an innovation oriented corporate culture. The project intends to develop a structured framework that, leveraging firm level micro data and consulting based case studies, systematically links different bundles of these enabling factors – especially the degree of digital maturity and AI adoption – to distinct trajectories in productivity, employment, and workforce upskilling. The candidate’s specific skills include applied micro econometrics, large scale firm level data analysis, assessment of AI impacts on organizational processes and business models, and consulting capabilities to translate empirical evidence into ex ante assessment tools and practical guidelines for AI enabled digital transformation

Bibliographic references must be relevant and up to date with respect to the proposed topic.

Oral interview The oral examination consists of a discussion of the submitted research proposal and aims to assess both the quality of the presentation and the candidate’s ability to critically engage with the project’s content. During the interview, knowledge of the required foreign languages is also evaluated through the reading and translation of an excerpt from a scientific article.

Admission to the oral examination is contingent upon achieving a minimum score in the evaluation of qualifications and the research proposal, while final admission to the PhD program requires reaching an overall score threshold established by the call for applications.
