Qualitative interviews. Modeling and simulation. Developing process theory with narratives (and secondary data).
2022, December 12 13 14
Focusing on two articles related to design and servitization, this session will describe the process of devising a research topic for doctoral research and particularly illustrate how topics can be combined to generate an original contribution. The empirical work reported comes from a multiple case study and an in-depth single case study, enabling comparison and discussion of these strategies, their philosophical as well as practical implications. The session can also introduce participants to the peer review process, using these two key papers, published almost a decade apart. The session will offer a non-technical exploration of system dynamics and hybrid modelling, illustrated through articles that develop a strategic vision and an operational plan to achieve it. The articles consider new technologies (heat pumps and 3D printing respectively) from the perspective of user adoption, business models and supply chains. Both use simulation to examine how proposed benefits can be achieved. From a theoretical perspective the session examines the gap between expected and realised value. The findings encourage reflection on how to make the expectations realistic. From a practical perspective these articles showcase applications and combinations of simulation methods to consider strategic and operational aspects longitudinally. The session demonstrates examples of process theories, which require a longitudinal perspective and in-depth explanations of phenomena and their interactions. In both cases, a narrative approach is used to ‘tell a story’ of how complex interactions take place over time. The session also demonstrates how secondary data, including patent citations, annual reports, press releases and other sources can be used to generate insights, along with the pitfalls and implications on reliability and validity of research.
