First year

Meetings with the Doctorate Board of Studies
Meetings with the Doctorate Board are scheduled for November and May.

In the November meeting, the PhD students will present their research topic and indicate the supervisors in preparation for their thesis.
In the May meeting, the PhD students are required to present the following materials*:
  1. Summary of the thesis project (3,000 characters including spaces + bibliography)
  2. Two critical summaries (each max 6,000 characters including spaces): one related to a text of choice from the "Critical Bibliography" (see here under Materials); another belonging to the preparatory readings for the thesis project. The choice of texts must be agreed upon with their supervisors.
The work must be sent by the PhD students to the Doctorate Board at least 15 days before the meeting date.

If necessary, after the meeting the PhD student must revise what has been presented, following the indications provided by the Board.

Examination for Transition from First to Second Year:
The examination for the transition from the first to the second year will take place in October in the presence of the Doctorate Board.
For the exam, the PhD students must prepare:
  1. A written report (max. 4,000 characters), accompanied by a bibliography, on the progress of the thesis project to be discussed during the interview.

  2. A short written text (max. 6,000 characters, including spaces) on one of the research seminars from the PhD program (freely chosen by the PhD student), to be submitted to the Doctorate Board 15 days before the exam date.
For progression from the first to the second year, attendance at scheduled PhD activities will be considered. The PhD students must attend at least 80% of the PhD program’s research seminars.
Passing the progression exam is necessary for enrolment in the second year.

Second Year
During the second year, PhD students are required to attend educational activities, ensuring 50% of their presence. For remote participation, adequately justified requests must be submitted to the Coordinator.
The work of PhD students will focus on drafting their doctoral thesis. In addition to the ongoing guidance provided by faculty/supervisors, two evaluation moments are scheduled with the entire Faculty Board.
In February, PhD students must send an updated abstract (maximum 2.000 characters, including spaces + bibliography) to the Board regarding the work done in recent months, following the guidelines received from the Faculty Board and Supervisors during the October progression exam.
In May, the Board will meet with PhD students to discuss the progress of the research conducted in view of their thesis. On this occasion, PhD students are required to present:
  • A reasoned index of the thesis (maximum 4.000 characters, including spaces)
  • Bibliography
The material must be submitted at least 15 days prior to the date of the interview. The students' work must be submitted via e-mail to the members of the Board. The mailing list of faculty is available in the resources section.

Progression Exam
The progression exam from the second to the third year will take place in October. All members of the Faculty Board will be present. The scientific growth of the PhD student and the project will be evaluated based on criteria of originality and scientific relevance.
The PhD student must present an oral report lasting 10 minutes regarding the work done.
For the progression from the second to the third year, attendance at scheduled educational activities will be taken into account. It is reminded that PhD students are  obliged to attend at least 50% of the doctoral program's educational activities.
If necessary, they are required to correct the material presented during the May interview, following the guidelines provided by the Board.
Passing the progression exam is a necessary condition for enrolment in the third year.

Third Year
Meetings with the Doctorate Board
A meeting with the Doctorate Board is scheduled for March.
The PhD students must submit an updated abstract (max. 2,000 characters, including spaces + bibliography) summarising the work carried out in the past months, following the feedback received during the October progression exam.
The abstract must be accompanied by the index of the thesis and bibliography.
The materials must be submitted at least 15 days before the meeting. Submission should be e-mailed to the Doctorate Board members (see above).
