| HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHICAL-SOCIAL SCIENCE |
The PhD programme in History and Philosophical and Social Sciences brings together a diverse range of academic disciplines and research interests, including Medieval, Early-modern and Modern History; Economic History; Palaeography and Diplomatic; the History of Christianity and Christian churches; Medieval Archaeology; Political, Theoretical and Moral Philosophy; Aesthetics, and Sociology. Collaboration and academic exchange between different fields of study are fundamental features of the programme, which especially aims at training young researchers to achieve excellence in analysing and acquiring methodological awareness in historical and philosophical studies, as well as social science. In the framework of wide internationalisation, teaching activities include conferences and seminars by Italian and foreign scholars, some of whom members of the PhD Programme’s Board. At the same time, joint supervision of PhD students by Italian and foreign experts (co-tutela), exchanges, and periods of study abroad are encouraged, to foster in-depth, comparative research, and engagement with the international academic context. The PhD programme is organised in two curricula: History, and Philosophical and Social Science. For the 42nd call, 8 positions with scholarship are offered: 6 funded by the University and 2 by the FIS project The Islamic Connection: Sicily, Tunisia and Egypt as the hinge between the Mediterranean, India and China (9th–14th centuries). Candidates interested in applying for the latter will have to state this in their application and submit a research project in line with the specific themes provided (please see below for further details). Five further positions are reserved to public employees under agreement with their employing bodies; candidates applying for them should state it in their application. An additional position is reserved to foreign candidates holding a scholarship funded by their home country. |

Research topic: Ceramics and Settlements in Sicily (10th–14th centuries)
Description: The central Middle Ages marked a period of transformative change in the Mediterranean region. Following centuries of economic decline after the fall of the Roman Empire, trade networks expanded significantly during the vibrant Commercial Revolution. Utilizing an unprecedented array of archaeological data and innovative analytical techniques, the ISLAMICO project aims to enrich this narrative by providing new qualitative and quantitative sources for interpreting the Mediterranean revival, focusing on three regions along the southern, Islamic shore: Egypt, Tunisia, and Sicily.
ISLAMICO will examine the exchange of both everyday goods and luxury items within and among these regions, concentrating on various agricultural and manufactured commodities such as ceramics, glass, paper, seeds, wood, and textiles.
The doctoral research aims to quantify and characterise selected ceramic assemblages from sites in Sicily dated between the 10th and the 14th centuries, in order to comparatively analyse the dynamics of production, distribution, and consumption. Particular attention will be devoted to identifying and interpreting technological innovations, also through the integration of archaeological and archaeometric approaches.

The doctoral research aims to characterise and quantify selected archaeobotanical assemblages from sites in Sicily, Tunisia, and Egypt, spanning different chronological phases and environmental contexts. The project seeks to comparatively analyse the dynamics of production, use, and circulation of plant resources. Particular attention will be devoted to identifying and interpreting changes related to the introduction of new species in diet and craft activities, as well as to patterns of circulation (local, regional, and supra-regional) of plant products such as wood, spices, and cereals, also through the integration of archaeobotanical and archaeometric approaches.
