Educational goals and objectives

CIVIL ENGINEERING The PhD program in Civil Engineering includes all the research lines in Civil engineering and Architecture.

The disciplinary aim, included in the PhD program, is particularly wide: it ranges from the scientific sectors of structural, geotechnical and environmental engineering to the history of construction, architectural composition and history of architecture in the important European tradition of the polytechnic school. The coexistence of such an articulated range of different knowledge and skills stimulates and facilitates disciplinary interactions, allowing to establish that link between the scientific field and the humanistic field, which need is particularly felt today.

In this perspective, a solid scientific board has formed over time, which has established fruitful relationships with the institutional and productive context and has obtained significant recognition in the international scientific community.

On the other hand, the heterogeneity of the specialized areas is balanced by the solid anchoring to a common mission, which is identical in the field of design and construction as in the field of civil engineering. To deepen the theoretical and applicative aspects of these issues, overcoming the fragmentation that characterizes the university system, constitutes the main objective of the Doctorate, both in training and in individual research.

The doctorate proposes three lines of research:

Structural and Geotechnical Engineering (scientific contact: Prof. Paolo Bisegna);
Architecture and Construction (scientific contact: Prof. Tullia Iori)
Environmental engineering (scientific contact: Prof. Renato Baciocchi)

The lines are closely linked to each other even in methodological autonomy. Although the specificity of the individual research of the candidates, the doctoral program is based on a solid base of training during the 3 years.

Research topics

Founded by: European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant

Research topic: Computational Modeling and AI for Cardiovascular Disease (pos.1) - ERC CoG VISTA - prof. Michele Marino
Description: The research project concerns the study of the mechanistic basis and progression of carotid atherosclerotic disease through advanced computational modelling and AI-driven knowledge integration. PhD Position 1 will focus on the development of multiscale computational models integrating systemic physiopathology with local vascular dynamics (hemodynamic and structural mechanics), using reduced-order models and Bayesian inference. This is an opportunity to contribute to an ERC-funded effort to redefine how cardiovascular disease is modelled and understood, shifting from fragmented evidence to integrated, mechanistic, and predictive frameworks. The positions provide a unique training environment at the convergence of computational mechanics, artificial intelligence, clinical research with the goal of enabling explainable models of disease progression. Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact Michele Marino (m.marino@ing.uniroma2.it) prior to applying, to discuss the project and assess mutual fit.

Research topic: Computational Modeling and AI for Cardiovascular Disease (pos.2) - ERC CoG VISTA - prof. Michele Marino
Description: The research project concerns the study of the mechanistic basis and progression of carotid atherosclerotic disease through advanced computational modelling and AI-driven knowledge integration. PhD Position 2 will focus on the integration of physics-based models with ontological knowledge graphs, using tools from graph theory, natural language processing, and surrogate modelling to enable structured knowledge extraction and hypothesis testing through generative AI. Research topic: Concrete: innovative conservation strategies (Altralinea - ref. prof. Tullia Iori)
Description: The PhD project will focus on testing innovative solutions to preserve exposed reinforced concrete surfaces in the architectural heritage of the 20th and 21st centuries. The project will be structured in three phases. The first, of a bibliographic nature, will involve the cataloguing and surveying of restoration interventions on exposed reinforced concrete surfaces, already completed or currently underway on iconic works both in Italy and abroad. The creation of an ad hoc database will enable a better analysis of the state of the art in concrete restoration and, above all, will ensure the possibility of monitoring the evolution and effectiveness of interventions over time and under different climatic conditions. The second phase will include the development of materials capable of preserving the original concrete from damage mechanisms, ensuring the original load-bearing capacity of the structure, while also maintaining the aesthetic value, surface finishes, and original color gradation of the materials. The third and final phase will involve the creation of a pilot construction site for the application and validation of the materials developed in the previous phase. Candidates are invited to contact Prof. Tullia Iori (dottorato@tulliaiori.com).
