The Ph.D. Program in Classical Antiquities and Their Reception: Archaeology, Philology, History has adopted the Quality Assurance (QA) system for Ph.D. programs recommended by ANVUR’s AVA3 guidelines (Self-Assessment, Periodic Evaluation, Accreditation). The main objective of the procedure is the continuous improvement of the quality of research and teaching in doctoral programs, to promote excellence through advanced education.
The AVA3 Guidelines structure the process into three fundamental aspects:
1. Self-Evaluation (each doctoral program implements a self-evaluation system to monitor the effectiveness of the educational program and the quality of research, by identifying strengths and areas for improvement).
2. Periodic Evaluation (ANVUR periodically evaluates doctoral programs to ensure they meet quality requirements and that the educational offerings align with the needs of the national and international context).
3. Accreditation (the accreditation process ensures that PhD programs comply with the parameters outlined by ANVUR and the Ministry of University and Research (MUR), guaranteeing the quality of the overall educational program). The accreditation procedures for doctoral programs are governed by Ministerial Decrees 226/2021 and 301/2022.
Quality Assurance for doctoral programs identifies the following as core elements:
The centrality of the doctoral student (the process places great emphasis on the development of doctoral students’ skills and support for research quality);
Transparency and accountability (every phase of the QA process is documented and transparent, to facilitate clear communication with the academic community);
Continuous improvement (through the collection of feedback and continuous monitoring, the QA system aims to systematically improve educational procedures and the quality of research).
