Educational goals and objectives

CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY The PhD Program in Cellular and Molecular Biology offers a unique multidisciplinary training experience leading to a Doctoral degree, the highest academic qualification in Italy. The Department of Biology, in partnership with several private and public institutions both within and beyond the Rome area, has established a program that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries to provide students with research opportunities across multiple laboratories.
The PhD program equips students with the skills required to conduct high‑quality research in both public and private sectors, contributing to scientific and technological progress and fostering the development of a highly qualified professional community with a strong international outlook. Graduate students can choose among research projects in a wide range of fields, including molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, developmental biology, and bioinformatics.
At the end of the program, the doctoral thesis is evaluated by two reviewers—one external to the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” and one from a foreign institution—appointed in consultation with the PhD Program Committee. Upon receiving a positive evaluation, the PhD candidate is admitted to the Final Examination. The doctoral degree is awarded by the Rector following the successful public defense of the thesis before the Examination Committee.
