Educational goals and objectives

PHILOSOPHY The PhD Programme in Philosophy aims to train scholars capable of producing original and innovative contributions in specific areas of research. At the same time, it fosters the ability to identify and explore connections between philosophical inquiry and other humanistic and scientific disciplines. The programme is international and interdisciplinary in scope. It promotes the acquisition of advanced knowledge and high‑level competences across the main domains of fundamental and applied philosophical research. The programme focuses on the core themes and methods of theoretical philosophy. It also includes the study of the historical development of philosophical thought, with particular attention to the transformation of philosophical categories and the hermeneutic and critical analysis of texts. Further areas of emphasis are theoretical and applied ethics, as well as political and social philosophy, with a view to promoting intercultural dialogue. Aesthetic issues are examined both in their own right and in their interactions with the literary, artistic, and scientific fields. The programme also addresses questions linking philosophy with the natural, formal, and social sciences, as well as philosophy of mind. In line with European principles for doctoral education, the programme enables candidates to design and carry out independent research. It supports the critical analysis of complex ideas and practices across academic and professional contexts. It also prepares doctoral candidates to contribute to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals within European policies. Finally, the programme promotes the development of transferable skills applicable both within and beyond academia.
