Reading and exegesis of a classic of Western philosophy (20 hours)
Members of the PhD board will focus on the reading of a classic of Western philosophy (e.g., Aristotle, Physics; Hegel, The Phenomenology of Spirit) and provide multidisciplinary exegetical perspectives, methodological insights, observations concerning philosophical historiography, as well as references to contemporary debates. Course attendance is mandatory for first- and second- year doctoral students as it constitutes a crucial testing ground for their formation.

Organization, spaces and topics of philosophy (15 hours)
The PhD board selects a topic that cuts across the entire history of Western philosophy (for example: the science and pseudo-science philosophical debate, the concept of nature and its transformations, etc.). A series of 10 lectures will be organized with the purpose of addressing the selected issue from multiple perspectives (historical, philological, aesthetic, logical, etc.) including the one offered by the so-called "hard sciences". Some lectures will be given by qualified scholars from other institutions. This activity aims to reconstruct the specific background of the problem and, at the same time, indicate possible points of contact with seemingly unrelated contexts.
Students are expected to gain awareness of diachronic dynamics in the history of ideas as well as to become familiar with the articulations of the European intellectual lexicon.

Philosophy and science: multidisciplinary pathways (15 hours)
The seminar is led from an interdisciplinary perspective involving mathematicians, scientists, antiquists, medievalists, and philosophers. The general purpose is to approach studies and researches on ancient and modern science in their constant genetic relations and mutual influence with philosophy. Researches on mathematics, medicine, physics, music, geography, etc. can be carried out in the most fruitful way by bringing together specific and sectorial expertises.
Regarding this type of activity, we intend to foster formal collaborations with colleagues and research centers both in Italy and abroad.

Seminars on various subjects (12 hours)
These seminars are organized by PhD supervisors in collaboration with the coordinator. Lectures will target subjects directly related to the specific researches carried out by the doctoral students.
Covered topics may change yearly and are determined by the members of the board according to the specific needs of the students.

Activities organized by PhD students (12 hours)
These seminars are directly coordinated by PhD students on topics directly related to their researches upon approval of the supervisors.

Method of choosing the subject of the thesis

The doctoral student chooses the thesis topic according to his or her scientific interests, after consultation with the supervisors, other possible experts and the Board of Teachers.

Admission to the second year

At the end of the first year of the course, the doctoral student will have to write two written dissertations related to the topics dealt with in two of the seminar cycles held during the year, take an oral interview on the classic subject of exegesis and present a final report on all the work carried out. The Board of Teachers will assess these elements.
