HANDBOOK for PhD STUDENTS, SUPERVISORS AND CO-SUPERVISORS

 

I year of course

 

Enrollment by October 31st

 

Meeting with the coordinator and the teaching staff

 

Assignment of a supervisor and a co-supervisor.

 

Assignment of a workstation in the PhD Student Room. The magnetic card and access key must be collected at the Department Secretariat by filling in the form to be validated and signed by the coordinator

 

Training activities: specific courses for the doctorate (see list), advanced master's courses, schools. 16 ECTS to be achieved by the end of the first year of the course.

Participation in Journal Clubs, colloquia, area seminars and possibly national and international conferences.

 

Research activity: identification of the research topic with the help of the supervisor and co-supervisor

 

Second year of the course

 

Registration by October 31st following the achievement of the expected 16 ECTS and validation by the coordinator of the mobility and research activities to be inserted in the Delphi website

 

Training activities: active participation in Journal Clubs, colloquia, area seminars and national and international schools and conferences.

 

Research activities: work on topics related to the thesis project, possible scientific collaboration visits abroad, presentation of the work carried out to the teaching body for admission to the following year of the course

 

Overall, each PhD student should spend at least three months abroad for scientific collaboration and training activities

 

Third year of the course

 

Registration by October 31st subject to admission by the teaching body and validation by the coordinator of the mobility and research activities to be inserted in the Delphi site

 

Training activities: active participation in Journal Clubs, colloquia, area seminars and national and international schools and conferences.

 

Research activities: work on topics related to the thesis project, possible scientific collaboration visits abroad, drafting of the thesis

 

Procedure for obtaining the PhD title (after the conclusion of the third year)

 

Request for admission to the final exam (by November 15th)

 

Delivery of the thesis to the coordinator by December 31st (unless extended or brought forward)

 

Sending the thesis to two external reviewers, chosen from the list proposed by the supervisor and co-supervisor.

 

One month wait to receive reviewers' opinions.

 

In the case of both positive opinions, presentation of the thesis to the teaching body after 1 or 2 weeks.

 

In the case of admission to the final exam, commission proposal: one internal member and two external members (also chosen from the two reviewers if available)

 

Waiting 2 or 3 weeks for the appointment of the commission

by the Magnificent Rector 

 

Final exam, release of the provisional certificate of achievement of the PhD title

 

Delivery of the parchments by the Rector

 

Journal Clubs

 

Two presentations of approximately 30 minutes, every other Wednesday from approximately 2pm to 3pm. DO NOT MAKE COMMITMENTS in conjunction with this activity.

Tentative dates:

2023: 22 November, 6 and 20 December;

2024: 10 and 24 January, 7 and 21 February, 6 and 20 March, 10 and 24 April, 8 and 22 May, 5 June

 

"Nulla osta" (authorization) for association with the INFN or other research bodies. Fill in the form with your details for the coordinator's signature.

 

Missions - Mobility and Research Funds

 

Authorization request validated by the coordinator (even if carried out on funds other than the Doctoral Mobility and Research Funds) to be delivered to the Department secretariat. Each doctoral student with a scholarship has approximately 1500 Euros per year available from Doctoral Mobility and Research Funds.

 

Refund request validated by the coordinator (only if made from Doctorate funds) to be delivered to the Department secretariat. If carried out using funds from another organisation, follow the organisation's procedures (authorisation request, carrying out the mission, reimbursement request)

 

Increase in the scholarship

 

For PhD students with a (university) scholarship, 50\% increase for periods of scientific collaboration abroad agreed with the supervisor and co-supervisor and authorized by the coordinator. The increase is compatible with further reimbursements from Doctoral or other Institution funds. Starting from the second year, every PhD student with a scholarship can benefit from the increase in the scholarship for three months a year. In a very exceptional case, the scholarship increase period abroad can be extended by taking advantage of funds NOT used by doctoral students of the same year of the course, eligible for the increase.

 

For doctoral students without a scholarship, agree with the supervisor and/or co-supervisor

the mission and reimbursement from funds available to them.

 

Authorizations for work activities

 

Submit requests to the coordinator, subject to favorable opinion from the supervisor and co-supervisor. Possible approval by the teaching body.

 

Suspensions, advance payments, extensions, waivers

 

Submit requests to the coordinator, subject to favorable opinion from the supervisor and co-supervisor. Possible approval by the teaching body.

 

Reporting (PNRR/PON/etc)

 

For doctoral students with PNRR or PON scholarships, insert the activities carried out on the MUR website for PON/PNRR/etc, subject to favorable opinion from the supervisor and co-supervisor. Validation by the coordinator

 

For international students from non EU countries, study visa application may require an offer letter by the coordinator. The DoV (declaration of value) of the Master's degree is required by our University only within 6 months after the enrollment but may be required by Italian consulates or embassies in order to issue the study visa.
