Stefano Cordiner is a Full Professor of Fluid Machines and Energy Conversion at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, where he also co‑founded and co‑leads the Sustainable and Clean Energy Research Group (SCERG). His research focuses on innovative energy conversion systems that accelerate ecological and digital transitions, with particular emphasis on renewable resources, hydrogen-based energy vectors, advanced thermochemical processes, and circular fuel pathways.
Professor Cordiner earned a Laurea in Mechanical Engineering (1989) and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (1993) at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. He has been a Full Professor since 2012, following appointments as Associate Professor (2003–2012) and Researcher (1994–2003).

Throughout his career, he has held significant institutional responsibilities, including service on the University Board of Administration (2008–2013), the University Senate (2004–2008; 2015–2018), and as Energy Manager of the university for over a decade, coordinating major energy‑efficiency programs to reduce consumption and emissions across campus facilities. He also served as Director of Facility Management at the University Polyclinic PTV (2016–2022), overseeing major energy and infrastructure investment programs as well as building investments for both the hospital and the public health system of the Lazio region.

Building on early research in advanced internal combustion engine concepts, his current focus is on hydrogen and fuel-cell systems, hybrid renewable energy setups, biomass valorization, and waste-to-energy technologies. This involves developing thermochemical methods for producing biofuels, hydrogen-enriched syngas, and platform chemicals from residual biomass streams. His team has significantly contributed to pyrolysis–gasification integration, catalytic upgrading of bio-oils, and the predictive modeling of complex conversion processes, as demonstrated by recent influential publications in Energy, International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, Renewable Energy, Waste Management, and Chemical Engineering Transactions.

He has collaborated with researchers from leading international institutions, including the University of British Columbia, Argonne National Laboratory, West Virginia University, Columbia University, RWTH Aachen, and Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse, through long-standing research partnerships and EU-funded programs. His project portfolio includes PI roles in several national and industrial collaborations (FIAT, ENEL, FORD, Magneti Marelli, Emitec, Süd‑Chemie, Ericsson) and participation in European Commission framework projects on hydrogen technologies. Professor Cordiner has produced over 220 scientific publications, comprising journal articles and peer‑reviewed conference proceedings.

Professor Cordiner teaches foundational and advanced courses in Energy Conversion, Internal Combustion Engines, Fluid Machinery, and Renewable Energy Systems. Over his career, he has supervised over 100 MSc theses and 14 PhD students (8 as primary supervisor and 6 as co‑supervisor), many of whom now hold academic, industrial, or research center positions.

He serves on the Editorial Board of Applied Energy and was Associate Editor (Energy) for Heliyon between 2020 and 2025. He regularly reviews for top-tier journals in energy, fuels, hydrogen systems, and environmental engineering (Applied Energy, Applied Thermal Energy, Bioresource Technology, Energy Conversion and Management, Energy, Energy and Fuels, Fuel, International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, Transactions on Control Systems Technology, ASME Journal of Fuel Cells Technology, Society of Automotive Engineers.).
