Full Professor of Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Roma “Tor Vergata” since 2000 and therein co-founder and Chief Strategic Innovation Officer (CSIO) of CTIF, a cross-disciplinary center for innovative communications infrastructures and applications.
Her major focus on research is presently Glue Technologies for Space Systems, Space Integrated Connectivity Architectures and Space Sustainability.
She is P.I. of the 40/50 GHz communications experiment of the TDP#5 “Aldo Paraboni” payload on board the ESA Alphasat satellite, launched in 2013. In more than a decade the TDP#5 communications experiment has and is providing a deep knowledge about the use of EHF satellite links for connectivity services and applications along with inputs about the role of EHF in a future sustainable use of space.
She has covered many roles within IEEE and the Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS) in the last twenty-five years. In particular, she has been IEEE Vice President, Technical Activities (2017); IEEE Director, Division IX (2014-2015); AESS President (2010-2011); IEEE Systems Magazine Associate/Sector Editor (2005-2006) and Assistant Editor (2007-2009); Editor for Space Systems for the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems (2001-2015); BoG Member-at-Large for many terms, including the 2023-2025 one; AESS Vice President Technical Operations (2021).
She is Member and Co-founder of the AESS Technical Panel on “Glue Technologies for Space Systems”, that has been awarded “AESS Outstanding Technical Panel of the year” in 2020, 2021, and 2025. She is AESS Distinguished Lecturer (2023-2026) on space sustainability and related design guidelines for future space systems. She is also Member of the IEEE Computer Society Technology Predictions Committee (2022-present), member of the Future of Workforce in Africa team (in the frame IEEE cooperation with AgID under the Mattei Plan for Africa). and Editorial Board Member of the Proceedings of the IEEE (2025-2027).
Among her recognition and awards, it is worth mentioning: the 1990 Piero Fanti International Prize; the 2009 Pisa Woman Award; the 2013 Excellent Women in Roma Award and the 2011 AESS Service Award. She has been IEEE Technical Expert recognized as “Impact Creator” in Information and Communications Technology. She has been inducted as a Professional into the Honor Society of IEEE Eta Kappa Nu (HKN). Since 2014 she is IEEE Fellows “for contributions to millimeter-wave satellite communications”. She is author or coauthor of more than 360 papers, 1 patent and 13 books.
