Emmanuele Angelo Francesco Jannini (shortly: Emmanuele A. Jannini), Full Professor of Endocrinology, Andrology and Sexual Medicine at the Department of Biomedicine and Prevention, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy, was born in Milan, Italy on April 22, 1960.
From 1979 to 1986, he was a fellow at the Institute of Histology and General Embryology (Prof. M. Stefanini) and at the Chair of Andrology of the V Institute of Clinical Medicine (Prof. A. Isidori), University of Rome La Sapienza. In 1986, he received his Medical Doctor degree (with honors), presenting an experimental thesis entitled “New endocrine aspects of idiopathic impotence”, and in 1994, he specialized (with honors) in endocrinology and andrology (thesis: “Role of thyroid hormones in testicular ontogenesis”). From 1988 to 1989 he was a PhD fellow in Endocrinology at the University of L’Aquila. In 1990, he was made Assistant Professor of Endocrinology at the Medical School of the University of L’Aquila. Subsequently, in 2000, he was appointed Associate Professor of Endocrinology and Sexology at the Medical School of the University of L’Aquila, and in 2007, Founder and Coordinator of the School of Sexology at the Faculty of Psychology of the University of L’Aquila. In 2010, he received a full professorship in Endocrinology. In 2014 he was appointed Full Professor of Endocrinology, Andrology, and Sexual Medicine at the Department of Systems Medicine of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, where he holds the first, and unique, course of Endocrinology and Medical Sexology (ENDOSEX) in the Italian universities for the students of the English Medical School.
During his career, Porf. Jannini built, with colleagues of the Rome Sapienza University, the first Inter-Universities (Universities of Rome Tor Vergata and Sapienza) 2yrs Master Course in Clinical Psychosexology, where he was lecturing as a full Professor of Psychoneuroendocrinology and Medical Sexology until 2024, when the collaboration between the two Universities ended. From 2020 to 2021, he was appointed temporary Dean of the new School of Medicine at the Kore University of Enna, Italy. Prof. Jannini served from 2021 to 2023 as president of the Board for the National Scientific qualification for full/associate professorship in the Italian higher education system (Natn. Scientific Abilitation, ASN) in Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Andrology/sexual medicine. Prof. Jannini was unanimously elected president of the National Council of Italian Full Professors of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Andrology/Sexual medicine (2023-2025).
Professor Jannini has had numerous experiences abroad: from 1990 to 1991 he was a guest researcher at the Clinical Endocrinology Branch (Chief, Dr J. Robbins), NIDDK, National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MD, USA), working in the Laboratory of Molecular Endocrinology (Dr V.M. Nikodem). This was followed by an appointment (1992 and 1993) as an exchange scientist at the Genetics and Biochemistry Branch (Chief, Dr D. Camerini-Otero), NIDDK, National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MD, USA), where he worked in the genetics laboratories (Dr J.E. Rall). From 2007 to 2011, he lectured at St Catherine’s College, Oxford (UK) on summer courses organized by the European Academy of Sexual Medicine. Professor Jannini is or has been Visiting Professor of Andrology or Urology in the following Universities: First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine (Guanghzhou) (May 2018-Apr 2020); Third Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine (Guanghzhou) (June 2021-May 2024); First Affiliated Hospital, Anhui Medical Universiy (Hefei) (May 2018-April 2020); Shanghai General Hospital and Department of Urology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, School of Medicine (Shanghai) (August 2018 - August 2021 and Academic Advisor of the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (from Sept 2019). Was then appointed as Guest Professor of Urology and Andrology at the Xi’an Daxin Hospital (July 2023 - June 2026). In spring 2021, the Council of Science and Training of Hanoi Medical University voted him as the Honorary Professor of Hanoi Medical University for the next three years. In February 2025, he has been elected Distinguished Professor at the Third Affiliated Hospital of the Sun Yat-sen University of Guangzhou.
Emmanuele A. Jannini has received various awards in the course of his career: the Valerio Monesi Fellowship for Research in Reproduction (1987), the Becton Dickinson Award of the Italian Society of Endocrinology (1992), the First Award of the European Academy of Andrology (2000), the prize for the best Special Issue of the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation (2004), the XXV Ottorino Rossi Award from the “Mondino” Neurologic Insitute, Pavia (2014) and the Career Award of the European Society of Sexual Medicine (2023).
Prof. Jannini served scientific Societies devoted to Sexual Medicine and Andrology. He is currently President of the Italian Academy for Couple Health, President of the Italian Council of the Full Professors of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Andrology, chairman of the Education Committee of the European Academy of Andrology, past General Secretary of the Italian Society of Endocrinology, past President of the Italian Society of Andrology and Sexual Medicine, Consultant of the Guangdong Sexual Association (2025-2028), past chairman of the Education Committee and of the Publication Committee (Pubcom) of the International Society for Sexual Medicine, and past member-at-large of the Board of Directors and member of the University Committee of the same International Society of Sexual Medicine Open Online University. Moreover, he is the Italian representative of the Section of Endocrinology within the UEMS (Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes) and representative of that section in the Multidisciplinary Joint Committee on Sexual Medicine (MJCSM) of the UEMS. In 2018, he was elected President of the MJCSM, being the first endocrinologist with that duty aiming to provide medical doctors competency certification in Sexual Medicine. Finally, he has served the European Medicines Agency, London, UK, as a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Endocrinology and Diabetes. He serves as Associate Editor of Sexual Medicine Reviews and of the Section “Andrology and Humanities” of Andrology, and he is or has been a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, Folia Biologica, Endocrine, Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences, and Integrative Medicine in Nephrology and Andrology. He has been the editor of the section "Controversies in Sexual Medicine" of the Journal of Sexual Medicine (<> on 2007, 2008, 2011, and 2012) He is the editor of Italian and international textbooks of andrology and sexual medicine, published and translated in different languages (English, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese Mandarin). He is Editor-in-Chief of the Springer Textbook Series TASM: Trends in Andrology and Sexual Medicine, Deputy EiC and Incoming Editor-in-Chief of Andrology, and Co-Editor of the multi-volume Reference Springer series on Endocrinology.
Prof. Jannini’s scientific activity is reflected in his > 400 books, chapters, and full papers (434) published in peer-reviewed international journals (total impact factor: >650; cited >16500 times; H-index: 73, according to Scopus, and 88, according to Google Scholar). His main research interests are sexual medicine and andrology (erectile dysfunction and subcellular localization of type 5 phosphodiesterase in genital tissues; pathophysiology of premature ejaculation; functional anatomy of female orgasm) and endocrinology of reproduction and sexuality, particularly testosterone and thyroid pathophysiology (role of sexual activity in the control of the hypothalamus-pituitary-testicular axis; molecular localization and the role of the nuclear thyroid hormone receptor in the male genital tract). He conducts his research in endocrinology, andrology, and sexual medicine both from a clinical and a basic perspective employing molecular, clinical, and psychometric tools. On the strength of his publications, he is listed as the world top author in the field of premature ejaculation according to the Web of Science Core Collection (Ma D et al. Andrologia, 2025), in the top ten authors in the field of erectile dysfunction (Hui J et al. Int J Impot Res, 2019), and, based on his citation metrics, in the list of worldwide 100.000 scientists (Ioannidis JPA et al., Plos Biol, 2019), in the list of the World's Top 2% Scientists Network (https://topscinet.com/), as well in the classification of the Top Italian Scientists (http://www.topitalianscientists.org). A research article published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine received the Honorable Mention of the International Society of Sexual Medicine as “Best COVID-19 Research Paper, 2021”. In 2024 he has been also awarded the Gold Prize of the ISSM Journal Best Paper Prize (doi: 10.1093/sxmrev/qeae016.) Finally, Prof. Jannini is active in promoting education in andrology, sexual medicine, and public sexual health worldwide and is a recipient of several public and private research grants dedicated to sexual and reproductive research.
