Research Activities
Since 1991 he is with the Department of Electronics Engineering of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, currently he leads the Sensors and Microsystems Group.
Since 2022 he is the director of the Interdepartmental Centre for Volatilomics "A.D'Amico"
He is mainly active in the following research themes: Artificial olfaction and taste; Chemical sensors technology; Opto-chemical sensors; Molecular nanostructures; Application of chemical sensor arrays to medical diagnosis, food quality, and safety; Signal processing, multivariate data analysis. Neural modelling.
Among the main achievements it is worth to remark the application of porphyrins as material for gas sensors and the pioneering activities in the application of sensors to medical diagnosis resulting in the first demonstration in 2003 of the diagnosis of lung cancer from breath analysis with gas sensors.

Publications
Di Natale has published more than 405 papers on international peer reviewed journals, and more than 150 papers in international conferences. His account on Scopus lists 564 entries. Scopus id: 7006897300.
His papers have been cited 15111 times obtaining a h-index=65 (source Scopus, May 2023).
Besides, he published more than 30 papers on collective books.

He patented 6 original inventions.
He edited the book Multisensor Systems for Chemical Analysis - Materials and Sensors edito dalla Pan Stanford Publ. 2014.
He edited 24 volumes of the proceedings of the Italian Conference on Sensors and Microsystems, and the national congress on sensors (publisher World Scientific from 2006 to 2009, and then Springer Verlag). He has been guest editor of three issues of Sensors and Actuators B and one issue of the Journal of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines,
He is Associate editor of the journal Scientific Reports (Nature-Springer) and Member of the editorial board of the journals Sensors (MDPI) and Chemosensors (MDPI)
He held 34 invited talks at international conferences and workshop.

Currently Di Natale gives courses on “Electronic Devices and Sensors” and “Sensors Systems” for the graduate program (Laurea Magistrale) in Electronics Engineering.
Coordinator of the PhD course in “Engineering of sensorial and learning systems” from 1999 to 2014
He tutored 12 PhD students.
He has been part of the final PhD evaluation commissions at the following universities: Siena, Linköping (twice), Barcelona (twice), Leuven (twice), Brescia, Siena, Pisa, Tarragona (three times)
Currently, Di Natale gives courses on “Electronic Devices and Sensors” and “Chemical Sensors and Biosensors” for the graduate program (Laurea Magistrale) in Electronics Engineering and “Integrated Sensors” for the graduate program (Laurea Magistrale) in Mechatronics and “Sensors and Application” for the graduate program (Laurea Magistrale) in Medical Engineering
He authored a textbook "Introduction to Electronic Devices" Springer 2023
In the past he teached "Sensors and detectors" and "Fundamental of electronics". He teached "statistical treatment of experimental data" at the University of Teramo.
