After obtaining a degree in Philosophy from La Sapienza University of Rome in 1996, I pursued further studies at the University of Oxford and the University of London, where I earned a Master of Arts in Philosophy in 2001. I was subsequently awarded a research fellowship by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the European Public Law Center in Athens. There, I conducted research on human rights and also taught at the European Regional Master in Democracy and Human Rights for South East Europe in Sarajevo.

In 2003, I obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in European Public Law from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Upon returning to Italy, I earned a Ph.D. in Political Theory from LUISS University in 2007. I was later appointed to teach first at the University of Graz in Austria, and then, from 2013, at the University of Oslo in Norway. At Oslo, I specialized in the theory of international law and subsequently obtained the Diploma in International Law from The Hague Academy of International Law in the Netherlands.

I have been a Fulbright Scholar at Columbia University in New York and Indiana University in Bloomington, USA, as well as a visiting professor at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung in Germany. I am the editor-in-chief of the journal Jus Cogens. Philosophy and Critique, published by Springer.

I returned to Italy in 2016 as an Associate Professor through the direct call program for Italian scholars working abroad. I hold the Italian National Scientific Qualification for Full Professorship in Political Philosophy (GSPS01/A) and in Philosophy of Law (IUS/20).

In addition to human rights and transitional justice, my research interests include Kant’s cosmopolitan theory, Machiavelli’s political thought, and the topic of fascism in the debates of the early Frankfurt School.
