Carlo Sinestrari was born in Rome in 1970. He has obtained his Master at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1992 and his P.H.D. in Mathematics at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" in 1997, under the supervision of prof. P. Cannarsa. Since 2001 he is full professor in Mathematical Analysis at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”.

He has spent periods as a visiting professor at the University of Tübingen and the Max-Planck Institute "Albert Einstein" at Potsdam. He has spent shorter periods and has held seminars at many academic institutions, among which the Centro De Giorgi at Pisa, University of Padova, ETH Zürich, University of Heidelberg, FU Berlin, WIAS Berlin, King's College London, Imperial College London, Warwick University, Princeton University, Carnegie Mellon University, Brown University and the ANU Canberra. He has been an invited speaker in many national and international conferences. He has held advanced courses within schools organized by the ICTP (Trieste), the CRM (Barcelona) and the CIME (Int. Math. Summer Center, Florence).

He has led a research unit within the italian research programs Cofin 2002, Prin 2005, Prin 2007, Prin 2009 and Prin 2022. From 2013 to 2016 he was the head of the Council for the PhD in Mathematics of his university. He has supervised 5 PhD theses.

He was part of the organizing committee of various international scientific events, the most recent ones are the INdAM Workshop "New trends in optimal control and Hamilton-Jacobi Equations" (Rome, July 3-7, 2017) the "International school on extrinsic flows" (ICTP, Trieste, June 4-15 2018) and the "School on Geometry and Gravity" (SISSA, Trieste, July 14-18 2025).

He is author of more than 40 research papers on international journals, among which Acta Mathematica, Inventiones Mathematicae, Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis and the Duke Mathematical Journal. He has written the monographs "Semiconcave functions, Hamilton-Jacobi equations and optimal control" (with P. Cannarsa). His research deals with Hamilton-Jacobi equations, optimal control problems, geometric evolution equations and hyperbolic conservation laws.
