Barbara Mecheri is an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Science and Technologies of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” since July 2019. She obtained her Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Catania (2004) and her M.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Florence (2000).

From 2004 to 2019, she conducted research and teaching activities at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” as a Postdoctoral Researcher, Fixed-Term Researcher (Type B), and Adjunct Professor. During her career, she has also spent research periods abroad as a Visiting Researcher at the University of Tokyo (Japan), INRS-EMT in Varennes (Canada), and the Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil).

She has obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale) as Full Professor in both “Chemical Fundamentals of Technologies” (03/B2) and “Foundations of Chemical Sciences and Inorganic Systems” (03/B1).

Her teaching activity includes undergraduate and graduate courses in general chemistry, energy materials, and electrochemistry. Since 2017, she has been a member of the Faculty Board of the Ph.D. program in “Materials for Health, Environment and Energy” (now “Materials for Sustainable Development”), where she has supervised or co-supervised 14 doctoral theses.

Her research focuses on materials for energy conversion and storage, particularly in electrochemical systems such as fuel cells, batteries, and bioelectrochemical devices. Her expertise includes applied electrochemistry, polymer electrolytes, electrocatalysis, and critical raw materials recovery. She has coordinated or participated in several nationally and internationally funded projects, including PRIN, EU H2020, and bilateral programs.

She actively collaborates with research groups worldwide, including partners in Japan, the United States, Canada, Brazil, China, Denmark, Spain, Ireland, and Italy.

She also serves as a reviewer for international funding agencies, including the U.S. Department of Energy, and for numerous high-impact scientific journals.

She has contributed more than 80 communications to scientific conferences, including invited presentations at major international events. Her scientific output comprises over 100 peer-reviewed journal publications, with more than 3,000 citations and an H-index of 34 (Scopus, October 2025).
