RESEARCH HISTORY AND ACTIVITY
Dr. Chiarelli's research is in the field of medical physics and biomedical engineering with a focus on the study of brain function and physiology with magnetic resonance imaging, diffuse optical imaging and advanced analytical approaches.
Dr. Chiarelli worked as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Beckman Institute, UIUC, Urbana, Illinois, USA, from 2013 to 2017. The Beckman Institute at UIUC is one of the most prestigious interdisciplinary research centers in the USA, as well as home to world leading laboratories in research on neuroimaging with nuclear magnetic resonance and diffusive optical imaging. During his experience in the USA, Dr. Chiarelli worked on projects concerning high-density diffuse optical imaging of the brain and its comparison and integration with nuclear magnetic resonance. He also participated in the development of flexible optoelectronic systems for wireless monitoring of arterial and tissue oxygen saturation.
From 2017 to 2020, Dr. Chiarelli was a Fixed-Term Assistant Professor (Italian RTD-A) in Applied Physics at DNISC, University G. d’Annunzio of Chieti-Pescara, Chieti (Italy). His position was funded by a H2020 grant, called Advancing Smart Optical Imaging and Sensing for Health (ASTONISH). The ASTONISH project concerned the multimodal integration, both from a hardware and software standpoint, of electroencephalography and functional near infrared spectroscopy in order to evaluate neurovascular coupling in physiological (e.g. related to aging) and pathological (e.g. associated with Alzheimer's disease) states.
From 2020, Dr. Chiarelli is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor (Italian RTD-B) in Applied Physics at DNISC, University G. d’Annunzio of Chieti-Pescara, Chieti, Italy. His research is and will be devoted to the development and clinical translation of novel approaches to probe brain physiology with nuclear magnetic resonance and diffuse optical imaging and with novel analytical methods also based on multivariate (Machine Learning) analysis.
Different software programs developed by Dr. Chiarelli in Matlab environment are constantly used by Italian and foreign University research groups. Dr. Chiarelli has several collaborations with important national and international research groups.
Dr. Chiarelli work, despite its young academic age (first publication in 2013), is characterized by an intense dissemination of his research:
-Number of Indexed, Peer-Reviewed, Publications: 69 (Scopus)
-Number of Indexed, Peer-Reviewed, Publications in the last 5 years: 47 (Scopus)
-Number of Citations: 1530 (Scopus)
-H index: 20 (Scopus)
The total impact factor of Dr. Chiarelli publications is above 270.
Around 40% of Dr. Chiarelli publications have a first or last author contribution and about the same number arose from international collaborations.
Dr. Chiarelli was also involved in 55 abstracts presented at national and international meetings and in 2 book chapters writing.
Dr. Chiarelli has more than 15 invited talks at national and international meetings.
