RESEARCH ACTIVITY

 

Prof. Camaioni's research interests have focused on reproductive biology, particularly the female gamete, its maturation in the ovarian follicle until ovulation and fertilization, as well as the study of stem cells, both embryonic and adult, and their use in tissue regeneration.

Since 1986, Prof. Camaioni has been interested in the fertilization process in mammals, with a particular focus on interactions among oocyte, sperm, and components of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Her doctoral work focused on studying alternative methods for introducing foreign genetic information into the mammalian genome at fertilization and during the early stages of embryonic development. From 1991 to 1994, in the laboratory of Dr. Vincent C. Hascall at the Proteoglycan Chemistry Section of the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, USA) and subsequently, in collaboration with her colleague Prof. Antonietta Salustri, Prof. Camaioni conducted studies in the murine model aimed at clarifying the characteristics of granulosa cells during the differentiation process, which occurs in close dependence on the oocyte. In 2000, she began a multi-year collaboration with Dr. Eva Nagyova, researcher at the Institute of Animal Physiology and Genetics (Prague, Czech Academy of Sciences), which has allowed her to expand her knowledge of follicular maturation to other mammalian species, such as the pig. Since 2005, in collaboration with the laboratory of Prof. Alberto Mantovani and his research group at the Humanitas Institute (Milan), Prof. Camaioni has used animal models of female infertility to study the role of PTX3, TSG6, and IalphaI proteins in the ECM during folliculogenesis, implantation, and embryonic development.

 

Since 2006, the laboratory of Prof. Camaioni has also been embroiled in biocompatibility studies on organic synthetic materials and their use as 2D and 3D scaffolds for the maintenance and differentiation of embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells, and iPSCs to improve in vitro culture conditions by mimicking the characteristics of the ECM, with the perspective to utilize such scaffolds to facilitate in vivo tissue regeneration. She has been involved in studies on the embryotoxicity and biocompatibility of variously functionalized nanomaterials.

 

Since 2016, in collaboration with Prof. Thomas M. Brown of the Department of Electronic Engineering at Tor Vergata University, Prof. Camaioni has been involved in studies on artificial retina models, in which each photosensitive polymer spectrally mimicked the photo-response of mammalian rods and cones. The developed platforms provide new tools not only for modulating cell behaviour and proliferation but also for recording bioelectrical photovoltage signals that can complement analyses with more sophisticated, yet often invasive, electrophysiological tools.

 

Since 2016, Prof. Camaioni's laboratory has been studying human mesenchymal stem cells from healthy tissues normally discarded, such as adipose tissue and dental pulp, to define their functional characteristics and evaluate their ability to regenerate and recover damaged or aged tissue in mouse models of ovarian diseases through the injection of these cells or the molecules they secrete.
